So you’ve heard about SMP and decided it’s an ideal hair loss solution for you, now you’re wondering what is the cost of scalp micropigmentation?
In fact, that’s a very good question. I want to preface this by saying that if this is the first question that you’re asking any provider, it’s the wrong first question. Generally, everything costs or all costs are relative to time and experience. If you’re looking for the cheapest cost of the cheapest provider, then you’re going to get the results based on that.
Norwood Scale & Measuring Hair Loss
First, the cost of scalp micropigmentation depends on the amount of hair loss you have. We use what’s called the Norwood scale to measure the amount of hair loss. From a scale of one which is minimal hair loss to a Norwood seven. So the more hair loss you have, obviously it’s going to cost a little bit more.
Artist Experience Level
Next, if you have a very well-known SMP artist who has a book of hundreds, if not thousands of satisfied clients, that artist is going to cost a little bit more. You’re actually paying for his or her experience and peace of mind.
If it’s a newer artist on that same scale, and they don’t have many procedures under their belt, and you’re the second or third client, then it may be cheaper. Although in this case, you might have some problems.
Experience matters in this. You definitely get what you pay for. I can’t tell you how many people I’ve given a quote to and they went someplace else. Unfortunately, a lot of them had their procedure butchered and then they needed laser treatment to remove the SMP, only to come back to me to properly do the procedure. They literally doubled, if not tripled their investment. So look for experience when evaluating
Special Style Requests or Extra Time Necessary
If you have a natural hairline that is way far up, but you want to bring it down lower after a couple of sessions, then this may incur additional costs.
You can expect your artist to charge you more because your treatment is now taking up more time. This is why when having a consultation with an artist it’s good to have them draw up a couple of different hairline options to better manage your expectations and get the price quote right from the beginning.
Scalp Micropigmentation Cost Range
Most artists that we know of charge within a range of $1,500 to about $4,000. Although again, it depends on how much hair loss you have.
Immediate Results & Lower Price Over Time
Another thing you want to consider when going through this is not specifically to direct cost, but the cost long-term. There are other treatments out there like hair systems that cost $300-400 per month. Hair transplants are often 5-figure procedure costs. And over time when using rogaine or other medications month-over-month or year after year are definitely going to add up and exceed the up-front investment of SMP.
Long term, those remedies definitely cost more than scalp micropigmentation. But not only that, SMP provides immediate results, and sometimes those other treatments take weeks, months, or even years to know if they actually work. So if you’re looking for speed, and the most reasonable long-term cost out there, then scalp micropigmentation is probably the best hair loss treatment for you.
Conclusion
So there’s a lot to consider when weighing the cost of scalp micropigmentation. Again it depends on your level of hair loss, the artists’ experience level, any special requests, or extra time. It’s also important to remember that it provides immediate results and in fact is a more reasonable cost long-term over other treatments.

Will SMP make my hair grow?
No, scalp micropigmentation is a hair loss concealment procedure. It will not make your hair grow. However, it does replicate the look of real hair follicles. This gives the look of an intended shaved head, or add the illusion of thickness for thinner hair.
