Most Frequently Asked Questions About SMP

Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a non-invasive treatment for hair loss that creates the illusion of a full head of hair. It involves the application of pigment to the scalp using a small needle. Pigment gets applied in a manner that mimics the appearance of thousands of hair follicles. The procedure usually requires 2 to 3 sessions to complete.

This innovative treatment achieves a variety of looks, including the appearance of a shaved head, added density to thinning hair, or camouflage skin diseases or scarring. It’s an affordable solution that provides immediate results and is suitable for almost everyone. SMP is not a hair restoration treatment, it is a cosmetic procedure that gives the illusion of hair.
The cost of scalp micropigmentation (SMP) treatment widely varies. It depends on various factors such as the extent of hair loss, and any special requirements.

To provide an accurate quote, you’ll need a consultation. You can visit in-person or send photos for us to assess the specific needs of your case. However, an average price give or take the amount of work needed could be a ballpark $2,500.

We have a range of prices that start at $1,200 for a scar and up to $5,500 for an individual who has Alopecia with no hair at all. We base this off the Norwood-Hamilton scale. Most of our clients have a horseshoe pattern and need a hairline, top, sides and blending. These jobs usually range between $2500-4,000 based on the specific needs of the client.
Generally, you can see results immediately after the first session. However, it does take 2-3 sessions to achieve the overall desired result. Each session takes 1-3 hours.

No, scalp micropigmentation is a hair loss concealment procedure. It will not make your hair grow. However, it does replicate the look of real hair follicles. This gives the look of an intended shaved head, or add the illusion of thickness for thinner hair.

Absolutely! Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is a suitable option for men and women experiencing hair loss or thinning.

Female pattern baldness is often characterized by diffuse thinning across the top of the head. This makes thinning particularly noticeable in areas where the hair parts.

The main goal of SMP treatment for women is to reduce the contrast between the hair and the scalp. By minimizing this contrast, it creates a permanent illusion of fullness. SMP can effectively conceal this contrast. It also provides a natural-looking solution for women dealing with hair loss.
One of the benefits of scalp micropigmentation (SMP) is that it provides a natural-looking solution. Our practitioners create an incredibly realistic look. It is unlikely that people will be able to tell that you have had the treatment done.

Many clients report family and friends believe they have grown their hair out or that their appearance has improved in some other way.

Who are ideal candidates

The ideal candidates for SMP are those who have carefully researched and evaluated the treatment process. It takes time to research and make an informed decision. This includes considering other hair loss treatments.

If you determine the immediate results of SMP outweigh the alternatives, it may be for you. Candidates may have undergone other treatments, such as a hair transplant or medication. Often time, they understand the benefits of enhancing these treatments with SMP.

They are well-informed and have realistic expectations of the outcome of the treatment. It’s important to consult with a qualified professional to determine if SMP is the right treatment for you.

Most suitable candidates for a density treatment are those with a hairline intact. They should also have enough hair coverage to achieve the appearance of fullness. Some examples of good candidates include:

Individuals who have undergone hair transplants and are looking to enhance the results.
Women, as they often have diffuse thinning, rather than complete hair loss.
Those who have managed to slow or stop hair loss through medications or other treatment.
Individuals who have been experiencing gradual hair loss over time.
Scalp micropigmentation can create the illusion of thicker hair. It essentially obscures sparse areas that show through thinning hair.

However, if the hair is too thin or is thinning quickly, it may be challenging to achieve a natural-looking result that will last. For instance, a 25-year-old man experiencing rapid hair loss may not be an ideal candidate for density. His hair may be too thin by the age of 30 to produce a natural appearance.

Similarly, a 40-year-old man with a receding hairline and fullness in the front but a completely bald crown may also not be a good candidate. In such cases, shaving the head and going for the shaved look may be a better option.

Absolutely! We’ve helped many clients reduce the visibility of their transplant scars

However, it is important for clients to have realistic expectations. Understand that scarring may still be visible to some extent. It generally depends on the age, color, and shape of the scar. Additionally, gaps in hair growth within the scars can also make it harder to conceal the scar. Due to this it is not possible to guarantee complete invisibility of the scarred areas.

However, it definitely yields significant improvements. If you have longer hair, it is important to keep in mind that more blending may be required if you decide to cut your hair shorter.

Yes. Since we custom blend our colors we are able to match hair color whether blonde, red, brown, black, or even gray hair!

Equipment and Products Used

We use a combination of different size needles in different areas of the scalp. By using different size needles, we are better able to replicate the exact size and shape of that hair follicle in that area of the scalp. The pain level for most client is around a 3 out of a 10.

Our follicle shaped needle implants into the epidermis, never reaching the dermis. The skin is made of up a matrix of cross fibers that have Lumen within the cells. The lumens allow the ink to deposit into the dermis and stay consistent in size and shape.
We inject ink using a rotary machine, which any other permanent makeup machine uses. The difference is the stroke in which we lay the ink and the depth that we implant the ink. We can implant ink on the top layer of skin because we are injecting more ink. Excess ink will fade away while the rest will stay. This leaves behind a small follicle shaped impression. The impression won’t change in size due to the face that it is siting on the dermis. The epidermis is has blood flow and overtime it spreads and will become a shade and blend into each other. This is why you see a lot of men and women who end up having a shade on their head 1-2 years later.

In order to protect what makes Scalp NY so different from our competitors we do not release the specific measurements of our needles. However, we can guarantee that we have taken our time in perfecting the tools of our trade. As a result every client can walk away knowing their treatment was specially crafted to provide the best look possible!

Absolutely not. We never reuse our needles, they are all single use needles. Every client receives a new needle at every sitting.

Frequently Asked Questions On Timing & Longevity

The answer to these questions lies in the individual makeup of the person. The sun has a very big impact on the life of the procedure. Additionally, so does your individual dermal collagen micro structure. Your genetic code has a lot to do with this, such as oils in your tissues and the chemical bonds in your skin tissues. These will break down the bonds of the pigment. Long-term sunlight radiation breaks down ink and the ink will dissolve into the skin. This could be the difference between your procedure lasting 10 years and due to the sun, it only lasts 2 years.

This is why we strongly suggest buying my anchor guarantee. which I have used as a lotion for my head daily and has kept my procedure unscathed in the sunlight. It is also the rejuvenation of your skin, your cycle of scabbing, how long it takes your tissues to heal themselves and much more. You have to understand that your body sees my ink as a foreign object and naturally wants to reject it.

This is also why we deposit more than other companies using a modified machine. The collagen microstructure acts different for each person. It generally fades away faster or slower 7 days after the first procedure. This is why we require 2-3 procedures to ensure full coverage due to different variables.

Consultations can often lead to booking procedures. If we have availability, we can start right away. If same-day treatment isn’t available, generally you can get booked within 1-3 weeks. We strive to accommodate our clients to get in as soon as possible after the consultation.

We provide post care instructions you should followed between your sessions. It’s advised to protect your investment with a quality moisturizer. You also should wear SPF sunscreen to achieve optimal results and longevity.

Every procedure package comes with a standard 2 sessions. The second session ensures optimal results while allowing room for small adjustments. We may find we want to tweak the hairline and color after the product has had time to cure down.

We recommend a one-year touch up We also advise our clients to wait at least one week after the completion of their initial service to schedule.

We can schedule consultations based on your availability and location. If you are not in close proximity, we can schedule a phone or Zoom/Facetime consultation.
